Three members of the Aspire group helped to deliver a teaching session at Staffordshire University for students studying on a Clinical Psychology Doctorate.
Latifa, Julia and Dawn all attend sessions at Aspire.
Julie was asked by Dr Joanna Saddington a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to come along and describe the barriers to her students, that people with learning difficulties experience when they engage with health professionals.
Initially the girls were apprehensive but soon got used to the surroundings and really enjoyed meeting all the tutors and students. Joanna showed everyone around the campus and spent a lot of time before the session preparing, so it wasn’t too daunting. By the time they got started they were really keen and spoke very well without needing any support from Aspire staff. It was an amazing experience. The activity gave a massive boost to the girl’s confidence, leaving them feeling ready for another challenge. They were presented with certificates which they have all proudly framed.
The University students were very interested in what they had to say, the feedback was really positive with students telling the girls their comments would definitely remain with them and influence their practise when they qualify.
One student has actually changed her career route to working in LD since the session at the University!
Aspire now have a strong link with the University and has started to open its doors to the possibility of work placement which is very exciting for the group.
Local County Councillor Ian Hollinshead provided the group with funding to plan a trip to London. He also visited the group during the General Election along with other local councillors.Jeremy Lefroy has very kindly arranged a guided tour of Parliament for the entire group. Group members have been preparing themselves by building a model of Parliament and researching the building and its history.
Well the Theatre is booked, costumes ordered and team briefed. All we need to do now is practice!
The show is planned to take place at The Gatehouse MET Theatre on 12th September at 7.00 pm.
